Jacoby 2NT

This convention was devised by Oswald Jacoby.

When partner opens a major at the one level, a response of 2NT is used as an artificial game force.

The requirement is an opening hand or more with four or more trumps.
This sets the stage for slam exploration.
Opener's rebid shows shortage or strength and responder can judge how to probe further.
For example, if opener has bid 1S and responder has bid 2NT, opener rebids as follows:

3 C Club shortage
3 D Diamond shortage
3 H Heart shortage
3 S No shortage, 17+ points
3N No shortage, 14+ - 16 points
4 C Good second suit
4 D Good second suit
4 H Good second suit
4 S No shortage, minimum opening (12 - 14- points)

Responder can now cue bid controls, settle for game or explore for slam.
After responder cue bids, a rebid of the short suit shows a void.

If there is intervention after 2NT,
Pass implies shortage in a suit below the opponnet's suit,
Double implies singleton in the opponent's suit
Other bids retain their meanings ......
Two examples:

Opener bids 1S, responder bids 2N, opponent bids 3H ..

Pass Club or diamond shortage
Double Heart shortage
3 S No shortage, more than minimum hand
etc.

Opener bids 1H, responder bids 2N, opponent bids 3S ..

Pass Club or Diamond shortage
Double Spade shortage
3 N No shortage, more than minimum hand
etc.
