Competitive Bidding
Over the years the bidding systems have improved and now players compete at every chance.
It is important to learn to negiotiate opponent's preempts, jump raises and overcalls.
The conventions are divided into two groups for ease of reference:
1. When the opponents have intervened:
It is important to assign clear meanings to doubles, redoubles and other bids.
For ease in remembering, the meanings should follow a consistent pattern.
This may not always be scientifically correct, but will create fewer misunderstandings.
The opponents will try to jam the bidding space if possible; so we will strive to define
our hand precisely, quickly.
When opponents preempt, it will force us to guess at a high level;
... when opponents have intervened ...
topics: takeout double, special double, over their preempt
2. When we can intervene, we will do so expediciously
The objective being to distract their bidding, consume bidding space and effectively
compete;
There are also lead directing advantages;
Allowances will need to be made for balancing in a pass out seat.
... let us intervene ...
topics: simple overcall, opening preempts, direct cuebid, no trump overcalls, defense
over their no trump
