Advanced Major Opening

The requirement for an opening bid of one in a major is 12 - 21 points and a 5 card suit.
The point requirement may be a bit relaxed in the 3rd or 4th position.
A response of 1 NT is forcing for one round. The opener may be forced to rebid a 3 card minor.
A response of 1 NT by a passed hand is semi-forcing.

All raises are weak. A response at the 2-level is forcing to game (2 over 1).

The scheme:

1 H - :
  1S - 6+ points, 4+ cards, F1
1NT - 6-11 points; F1
2C,2D - Natural, Game Forcing
2H - 6-9 points, 3-card hearts
2S - 4+ H, GF, Jacoby ( Popup Jacoby)

** Many of the bids above were developed by Mr Marty Bergen.

Over a 3rd or 4th hand opening (i.e. responder is a passed hand),

Reverse 2-way fit showing Drury is used.

1 H -: Partner is a passed hand
  1NT - semi-forcing
2C - 10-11 points, 3-card H
2D - 10-11 points, 4-card H, no shortage
2H - 6-9 points, 3 card H
2S - 4-6 points, 6-card suit
2N - weak, 6-card minor
resp 3C - pass or correct
3C - 10-11 points, 4-card H, shortage somewhere
     resp 3D asks where
3D - 7-9 points, 4-card H

Game try after a single raise e.g. 1H - 2H

1 H - 2H:
  2S,3C,3D - Help-suit game try
2N - asking for shortage
     resp 3C,3D,3S - Shortage
resp 3H - No shortage, minimum
resp 3NT - No shortage, maximum
3H - general game try (does not fit above)
resp 3N - accept game; balanced hand

Sequences after 2 over 1

The principal of fast arrival is used.
If a game force has been established in a suit, then bidding game shows a minimum hand,
while other bids tend to show stronger hands or ask for more information to assess slam potential.

1H - 2D:
2H - good 6-card H, may me more than minimum, may be unbalanced
    3H - Heart support, extras
    other responses natural
2S - 4 card spades, does not show extras (?)
3C - may not have clubs, asking opener to further clarify hand
    3H,3S - support & extras
2N - balanced minimum
    3H - support & extras
3C,3D - Natural ( or support)
3H - Sets hearts as trumps, good hand
3S - 6+/5+ in majors, good hand

If opponents double

When opponents double an opening 1H bid, the emphasis shifts to competition.
Priority is given to showing a fit for partner.

1 H - (Dbl):
ReDbl - 10+ points; may not have hearts
1NT - value bid, stopper in spades
2C - 7-9 points, 3-card H
2D - 10-11 points, 3-card H
2H - 0-6 points, 3-card H
2S - 4-6 points, 6-card suit; NOT USED
2N - weak, 6-card minor
resp 3C - pass or correct
3C - 10-11 points, 4-card H
3D - 7-9 points, 4-card H
3H - 0-6 points, 4-card H

If opponents intervene

If opponents intervene with 1S, 3C & 3D bids retain their their usual meaning.
For all other interventions they are off.
Doubles of intervening bids are negative; they could be competitive or strong.
A cue-bid of the opponents suit shows a limit raise or better in support of partner.
Jump raises are weak.
No Trump bid shows stopper in the opponent's suit.
Suit bids are competitive.
A pass, especially of 2C & 2D, may be for trapping.
