Precision - Minor preempt

Openings of 3 Clubs, 3 Diamonds and 3 No Trumps are covered here.

The objective of a preempt are destructive in nature. With that in mind, openings of 3C and 3D are done with a long suit and few points.
Another way of looking at a 3 level preempt is that it should be almost trickless.
The range is 5 - 9 points. It may be stretched a bit depending on vulnerability.

Some minimum preempt hands: S xxx S xx S KQJxxxx Sx ; S xx S x S xxx S KQ10xxxx
Some maximum preempt hands: S xx S Kxx S KQJxxxx Sx ; S x S Qxx S KQ10xxxx S Qx

Hands like S xx S Axx S KQ10xxxx Sx contain almost two tricks and are too strong for a 3 level preempt.
It is usually better to pass and come in to the bidding later.
However, in the first or second seat vulnerable, this hand could be opened 3D.

3 No Trump

A 3 NT opening is done with a long strong minor suit, and, usually 7.5 to 8.5 tricks.
Some examples:
S xx S Axx S AKQxxxx S x
S xx S Kxx S Ax S KQJxxxx
S xx S xx S AKQJxxxx S x

In response:
4C: Pass or correct to 4D
4D: Asks opener to bid singleton or void
4H,4S shows shortage in the suit; 4N shows shortage in other minor; 5C,5D shows suit and no singleton
4H,4S: Natural, to play
4N: Quantitative
5C: Pass or correct
5D: To play
6C: Pass or correct
